Termites were found on an interior wall next to a sliding glass door. Tunnels were also found in numerous other locations throughout the home. The home owner was unaware of any problems until our inspection today.
In Bogor, Indonesia ants are being bred in jars, as ant eggs have become a hot commodity in local markets. An alternative food rich in protein and vitamins, ant eggs are often boiled in soup. The breeders in Bogor can produce some 300 pounds of eggs a month.
Ants form part of dishes in a variety of cultures - honeypot ants are dug up from the ground and eaten raw by aboriginal peoples in Australia.
Leafcutter ants, also known as Hormigas Culonas in Spanish are eaten mainly in South America - in Colombia, they are sold like popcorn at cinemas.
Lemon ants are found in the Amazon jungle and are said to taste like just that lemons.
Edible insects are being promoted as a low-fat, high-protein food for people, pets and livestock.
According to the U.N., they come with appetising side benefits: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and livestock pollution, creating jobs in developing countries and feeding the millions of hungry people in the world.
Scientists who have studied the nutritional value of edible insects have found that red ants, small grasshoppers and some water beetles pack (gram-per-gram or ounce-per-ounce) enough protein to rank with lean ground beef while having less fat per gram.
Termites swarmed in a customers home next to his stairs! I pulled back the carpet and voila! A tiny crack in the foundation right in the middle of the living room allowed these wood destroying insects to enter right into the house where they fed on the carpet tack strip. After the munched on the tack strip the went right on up into the wall and then into the stairs. Call me today for an inspection before it's too late for your home!
Ants are industrious little creatures, as anyone who has ever owned and ant farm can confirm. They create complex sets of tunnels apparently at random, while all seeming to be working toward a single goal.
Scientists have always been fascinated by the hive mentality of ants, so when a large abandoned ant nest was discovered in Brazil, they seized the opportunity to explore the ant world through a rather unique method.
The scientists spent ten days pouring over 10 tons of concrete into the surface air vents of the ant nest. After allowing the concrete to set for a month they then began excavating the ground around the nest to reveal the internal structure. What they discovered surprised them all.
The nest extended to a depth of 26 feet and covered an area of 500 square feet. The complex featured a design that provided good ventilation, and a network of tunnels that provided the shortest route between key locations from anywhere in the nest.
All in all, the scientists estimate that the ants would have excavated close on 40 tons of sand while they were building the nest with each ant knowing exactly what it needed to do.The researchers likened the building of the nest to the construction of the Great Wall of China.
Already treated a home for fleas this year. Seems like even the cold icy winter can't keep these disease carrying parasites down. Fleas to me are one of the worst insects. Not only do they inflict pain when they bite you but they can multiply quickly and before you know it Fido, and your family are scratching everywhere! I'm still unsure why God created fleas. I know he has a plan but I'm not sure what these terrible critters have to do with it!- my 2 cents.....
